So, it is nearly upon us – the UK arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. Following the build-up and the TV series to choose “Jesus” this tour is likely to sell very quickly and we would expect most if not all the venues to be sold out.
Did you know that Jesus Christ Superstar was the first hit musical brought to the professional stage by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice on Broadway in October 1971? In 1972 the show arrived in London and starred Paul Nicholas as Jesus. Jesus Christ Superstar went on to become the longest running musical in the West End ever by 1980, with 3,358 performances under the belt, and a gross revenue of £7.5m (that was a lot of money in 1980!!). Although the show has not been in the West End since 1996 it has continued to have success touring around the world, and is now back in London in 2012!
The show will feature Melanie C (Spice Girl of course!) as Mary Magdelene and of course Melanie C was also on the panel of the Superstar TV show and so was instrumental in the choice of her co-star of Ben Forster who will play “Jesus” although the final choice was made by the public vote from the last 3 survivors of Ben Forster, Roger Wright and Rory Taylor.
The show kicks off on 21st September at the O2 Arena and then visits Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester (again!), Belfast, Dublin, Liverpool, Nottingham and finally Sheffield.
